Natural Hazards Mapping

Website Mapping Homepage

Natural hazards have an impact on every Australian State and Territory. These hazards include bushfires, cyclones, earthquakes, floods, landslides, severe weather, tsunami and volcanoes. These phenomena threaten lives and damage private and public assets, as well as disrupt water, power, transport and communication services. These hazards and their associated impacts also can seriously affect employment, public administration and incomes to industry, agriculture and commerce.

This mapping site allows for available natural hazard data to be freely searched, queried and downloaded. The tools that are available on this site are:

Australian Flood Studies Database

The flood studies database provides metadata on riverine flood studies completed in Australia between 1980 and mid 2004.

The flood studies database can be searched by:

  • Date the flood study was completed;
  • defining a catchment or stream name; or
  • selecting a geographical area

The flood studies database can be sorted by:

  • Category of flood study; or
  • category and value of the average recurrence interval.

The map will not display the location of each flood study but it can be used to identify a catchment or river name, or to select an area to search for studies.

Australian Earthquakes Database

The earthquake mapping tool allows you to:

  • View recent earthquakes which occurred over the past 30 days;
  • search and explore all Australian earthquakes;
  • search and explore earthquakes worldwide;
  • view seismograms of earthquakes over the past 90 days; and
  • advise Geoscience Australia when you have felt a recent earthquake.

Australian Landslide Database*

The Australian Landslide Database contains information on landslides that have been recorded in Australia since 1842. Data is used in risk assessments and to raise awareness about landslide occurrence and their impacts.

The landslide mapping tool allows you to:

  • Search the database and display landslide locations on a map;
  • access landslide records from three separate landslide databases;
  • filter your search by landslide type, cause and damage;
  • view tabulated search results;
  • view photographs attached to individual landslide records (eg: Landslide ID #36); and,
  • view landslide locations in 'Google Earth'.

*The Australian Landslide Database is a prototype application presently under development. A new methodology is being trialled to offer users access to information held by host providers. Until further work is completed on this database, unfiltered searches may take one minute to execute. Your understanding is appreciated as we continue to refine this new methodology.

National Exposure Information System (NEXIS)

NEXIS online contains national residential building information.

The tool allows you to search by Local Government Area (LGA) to view summarised information on:

  • Residential building types
  • Roof types
  • Wall types
  • Building ages
  • Income groups
  • Building replacement and contents costs

NEXIS online is currently under development. Information on Commercial and Industrial buildings will soon be available. Data requests for search results can be forwarded via the download tab.
